MICCA is proud to introduce our featured speakers: Doug Johnson, Director of Media and Technology for the Mankato Public Schools and faculty member of Minnesota State University; Cheryl Lemke, President and CEO of the Metiri Group, a consulting firm dedicated to advancing effective uses of technology in schools; and Chris O'Neal, a former elementary and middle school teacher from the Calcasieu (pronounced Cal ca shoo) Parish School System in Louisiana, who works at the University of Virginia to support the Virginia Department of Education by providing outreach and professional development for school administrators across the state.

Doug Johnson is the Director of Media and Technology for the Mankato (MN) Public Schools and serves as an adjunct faculty member of Minnesota State University. His teaching experience includes work in grades K-12 both here and in Saudi Arabia. He is the author of four books: The Indispensable Librarian, The Indispensable Teacher’s Guide to Computer Skills, Teaching Right from Wrong in the Digital Age, and Machines are the Easy Part; People are the Hard Part.   Don’s book Machines are the easy part; people are the hard part is now available as a free download at Lulu. 

His regular columns appear in Library Media Connection and on the Education World website. Doug’s Blue Skunk Blog averages over 50,000 visits each month, and his articles have appeared in over forty books and periodicals. Doug has conducted workshops and given presentations for over 130 organizations throughout the United States as well as in Malaysia, Kenya, Thailand, Germany, Qatar, Canada, Chile, Peru, the UAE and Australia and has held a variety of leadership positions in state and national organizations, including ISTE and AASL.

Doug presents and gives keynotes at local, state and national conferences including NECC, AASL, FETC, MACUL, GaETC, and TIES.  He also presents at NE/SA, ECIS, and EARCOS conferences and conducts workshops and consults for school districts throughout the country.  His sessions are tailored for school media specialists, technology coordinators, administrators, and teachers. All sessions are illustrated with computerized slide presentations, include handouts, and both theory and practical applications.  And of course, humor is a very large part of every presentation - and sometimes it is even intentional.

Cheryl Lemke is President and CEO of the Metiri Group, a consulting firm dedicated to advancing effective uses of technology in schools, and serves as the Practice Leader for Metiri Group Policy Consulting. Prior to launching the firm, she was the executive director of the Milken Exchange on Education Technology for the Milken Family Foundation.

Cheryl specializes in public policy for K-12 learning technology, working at many levels with governors, legislators, superintendents, business leaders, and teachers. She currently works with both the public and private sectors in states across the country, as well as at the national level. Cheryl works with several states on leadership in technology initiatives, and most recently authored the definitive work on 21st century skills that was published by the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory and the CEO Forum. Lemke's 25-year career in the public sector and her work with Metiri Group includes projects related to assessing the impact of technology on learning; gauging the progress of states, districts, and schools in bringing technology to the learning process; conducting surveys and focus groups; convening national experts in discussions on policy issues; and designing and prototyping educational technology frameworks.

Recognized nationally as a proactive leader in learning technology, and sought after as a consultant, speaker, and writer, Cheryl Lemke designs policy in the State house that translates into sound educational practice in the schoolhouse.

Chris O’Neal is a former elementary and middle school teacher from the Calcasieu (pronounced Cal ca shoo) Parish School System in Louisiana, where he received numerous Teacher of the Year honors and chaired the Mayor’s Committee for Youth Leadership for the City of Lake Charles. Chris went on to work in the Curriculum and Instruction office for the school district helping teachers in high-risk schools to enhance classroom practice through the use of new teaching strategies and tools. He also developed content to support high-risk classrooms, and provided professional development to teachers and administrators.

He worked at the State Department of Education in Louisiana, focusing on grant management, policy and planning issues, district support, and eventually became the state director of technology. His work with the Governor’s Office and the Louisiana Legislature earned him status as an honorary State Senator. Featured as a “Shaper of Our Future” in Converge Magazine, Chris received the “Making it Happen” award for leaders in the field of education.

Chris now works at the University of Virginia to support the Virginia Department of Education by providing outreach and professional development for school administrators across the state. Chris serves as a faculty associate for the George Lucas Educational Foundation; provides leadership professional development, content development, consults for ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education); conducts educational leadership institutes, workshops, and evaluations for several districts around the country, and serves as a leadership facilitator for SETDA (State Educational Technology Directors Association). He is writing on a book to assist school district personnel to lead school improvement efforts through the effective use of data.
